about
Following the release of last years lauded ‘Bury The Moon’ album and successful world tour, Ásgeir has returned with his beautiful original Icelandic version of single ‘The Sky Is Painted Gray Today’, ‘Öldurótið’. He tells us that “The Gray sky lyric is a story of an old man walking by the ocean and seeing a boat that’s fighting the waves on a stormy day, then the scenery is reflected in his own life”. Of the translation from his original mother tongue to English, he says “Some of it can be easily directly translated but some words have to be changed and the meaning is then slightly altered.”
With ‘Öldurótið’ we’re given the chance to appreciate its original poetry as it was intended, adding further meaning and a clearer vision of Ásgeir’s ability and artistic deftness.
The material encompasses his signature emotive delivery, delicate yet expansive folk, and intricate guitars. A more stripped-back approach was taken when putting these together, with a focus put on his singular vocal and the dexterous strumming of layered, warm acoustics. There’s an understated potency these tracks, a sense that even in their simplicity, we are in the presence of a master craftsman, humbly, at his best.

() by Sigur Rós is my first introduction to the genre of Post Rock. I remember vividly as a kid watching Vanilla Sky's ending, as he takes a leap of faith to wake up from the terrible nightmare he has been experiencing. It was a genius idea to incorporate the Untitled 4 track from this album also known as "Njósnavélin" to convey the correct emotions to the viewers of the movie. () is Sigur Rós most melancholic album to date in my opinion.
